<lead><![CDATA[ISN'T THE WATER COLD? This is the time of year, actually, when the largest and northernmost of the Great Lakes is at its warmest, because it takes a long time for it to heat up, said John Anderton, a professor of Earth, environmental and geographical sciences at Northern Michigan University in Marquette and a cliff-diver.]]></lead>
<text><![CDATA[But, if you prefer, you can put this on your to-do list for next summer.CAN I JUST JUMP IN ANYWHERE? There are two things needed to make a good cliff-diving spot -- a vertical rock face, so you don't hit any outcropping on the way into the water, and deep water, so you don't hit the lake bottom.HOW DO THOSE COME ABOUT? Both are caused by the water, Anderton said. It finds its way into big joints, cracks and volcanic intrusions and breaks off the rock at those weaker points, creating the straight path down into the water. And the waves constantly hitting the headlands scour out deep plunge pools.WHAT ARE THE BEST SPOTS TO TAKE THE PLUNGE INTO GITCHE GUMEE, AS HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW CALLED SUPERIOR? Presque Isle Park, Dead River Falls and Little Presque Isle in Marquette and Canyon River Falls near L'Anse, Baraga County, are tops, said Nic Dobbs of Down Wind Sports in Marquette. All offer wonderful views. But the cliffs at Presque Isle Park are extra special. They're made of dark volcanic rock, which looks black, but actually is a deep green.HOW EXACTLY DO I CLIFF-DIVE? Just as the term implies, take a flying leap off the rocks -- and maybe don't look down. Dobbs, an accomplished cliff-diver, recommends a feet-first pencil dive or a one-and-a-half, which involves a front flip followed by half a front flip.IN SHORT, "GO JUMP IN A LAKE." BUT AFTER YOU DO, WHAT ABOUT GETTING OUT OF THE WATER? You can swim back around to shore or climb the cliff directly out of the water.]]></text>
